‍What would it mean if everyone in BC had a real income floor to stand on? If we shared dividends from BC's common wealth?

Right now, too many people in this province are being squeezed by rising costs, housing insecurity, and growing economic stress. Even people working hard and doing everything right are finding it harder to get ahead.

At the same time, AI and automation are starting to reshape work, weaken bargaining power, and put more pressure on workers, families, and communities.

BC does not need to wait for this to get worse.

‍A guaranteed basic income can help build that floor. It can reduce poverty, improve housing and food security, support workers through periods of economic change, and give people more freedom to care for family, go back to school, or find better work.

BC should also create a sovereign wealth fund that pays a BC Dividend, so people share directly in the wealth created by our natural resources, AI, and public investments.

The case is overwhelming. The New Leaf Project with UBC showed that direct cash support helped people move into stable housing faster, reduced shelter use, and improved employment outcomes. The Union of BC Municipalities has endorsed a universal basic income. The Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis estimated that a guaranteed basic income could grow BC’s economy by $16 billion a year, create over 100,000 jobs, and lift hundreds of thousands of people out of poverty.
