In August 2021, the NDP announced a Guaranteed Livable Income as part of its 2021 election mandate. Prior to that at the 2021 NDP National Convention, party members proposed more than a dozen Basic Income policy resolutions, although none were actually voted on.
Now that a Guaranteed Livable Income is official on the NDP platform, let the party know you expect them to honour their promise by using the tools on this page.
Update: October 2021
Canadians Have Re-Elected a Liberal Minority Government
Dear NDP supporters,
The 44th Canadian election of 2021 resulted in a Liberal minority government. With the NDP gaining one riding for a total of 25 seats (Globe and Mail), there is an increased opportunity for the party to drive basic income onto the national platform (federal election results). As likely as the election results may have been, it is of interest to note that more than 40 Basic Income champions were elected to Parliament this time around, including 20 NDP MPs. There are now 15 MPs in Ottawa who pledged to actively support the establishment of basic income in Canada, including 7 NDP MPs, 2 new MPs and a Cabinet Minister. Another positive development for the basic income movement!
It is clear that the acceptance of a universal basic income to eliminate poverty and grow the middle class is spreading country wide. Of note is the deputy leader of the NDP, Alexandre Boulerice, recently spoke at the Montreal Basic Income March on September 25, 2021. The support is palpable!
With more backers in government, we have the numbers needed to push basic income onto the national agenda.A strong group of NDP caucus members, as well as other supporters like Green Party MP Mike Morrice of Kitchener Centre, will surely activate progress and change in policy as well as influence the Liberal leadership to move forward with basic income for all Canadians.
Jagmeet Singh said it best: “This is an unprecedented moment for our country. Canadians need a government that has their back...” UBI Works agrees with this sentiment and we deepen our commitment to advocate for basic income and a Canada where everyone can pursue their potential and not be held back by basic material constraints.
