With Gratitude and Hope for a Basic Income Now (Ontario Election 2022)

June 3, 2022

The following is from an email sent to all Basic Income Now subscribers on June 3, 2022, following the Ontario Election.

Dear Basic Income Now Supporters,

We want to express our sincere gratitude to the thousands of you who worked together across Ontario to put Basic Income on the map during this election. From pushing your candidates to pledge with emails and calls; to sporting your Basic Income Now signs and t-shirts; to donating, signing, meeting, and marching: we are part of a powerful and growing movement to transform our society.

The re-election of a Ford government majority means that Basic Income will be unlikely to be a provincial mandate for the next 4 years. However, unlike any prior election your efforts helped elect 15 vocal MPP supporters or pledge signers to Provincial Parliament.  We ask Ontarians to take a breath, and then turn their focus with us to other provincial campaigns, and a further push for a Basic Income at the national level.

In total, 123 candidates from 3 parties, across 101 ridings (81% of all ridings) signed our pledge and committed to working towards Basic Income if elected. Let's acknowledge the winning pledge champions who will drive Basic Income on the agenda in Queen's Park:

Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner in Guelph

Liberal Party MPP Mary-Margaret McMahon in Beaches-East York

NDP MPPs Chandra Pasma in Ottawa West-Nepean, France Gélinas in Nickel Belt, Peggy Sattler in London West, Sandy Shaw in Hamilton West-Ancaster-Dundas

Plus at least 9 more supportive MPPs who have not signed the pledge. See the full list of Pledge Signers here.

We must help these MPPs bring a Basic Income to reality by continuing to build our movement locally, provincially and nationally. Thank you again for your engagement during this vital democratic process. We do this together. We do this with hope for sustainable and just future for everyone.
